Common Refrigerator Issues
Not cooling in fresh foods section but freezer working good
probable causes: defrost circuit components bad:
heater, timer, thermostat or control that controls the defrost circuit could be failed or working intermittently
will need disassemble freezer test components using a voltmeter. run diagnostics on some models.
symptoms: icing up in the freezer section on he back panel or no air flow from the vents to fresh foods section
(on some models fan does not run unless doors closed )
Freezer not Cooling well
Probable Cause: System has low Refrigerant or Freon level is low
Symptoms: freezer not freezing ice cream hard.
if the freezer temperature slowly increased over period of few months most likely there is a very slow leak in the system, Freon is odorless gas so you wont be able to notice it or smell it or hear it. You will need a technician install a valve to be able to test the refrigerant level and refill the system if possible usually is a temporary repair if the refrigerator is under 5 years old might be not cost effective repairing the leak older 15 year old refrigerators will hold the Freon level for quite a few years.
Things To Check: Check the condenser coils make sure they are not clogged with dust or the refrigerator not too tight pushed to the wall, as it will run a lot more and in some cases will wear out the compressor shortening the life span of the appliance.
Probable cause II: bad evaporator fan motor
air cannot move because of restricted or burned out fan motor
symptoms: before failing motor can become loud, or refrigerator doesn't make any noise in freezer section.
also could be bad control board that sends power to the motor, sometimes visibly burned.
Refrigerator Not Cooling at all
Probable Causes: Compressor not running, Condenser Fan not working, Bad Cold control or Control Board
Symptoms: Refrigerator not making any noise, possibly the cold control failed or main control board, especially if the light inside the fridge not working will need technician to diagnose it.
Other probable Causes:
Stuck Compressor or failed relay. If the refrigerator sounds like its running but not cooling at all,
Symptoms: Clicking noise from compressor compartment, Compressor Hot but not buzzing, that might indicate that its stuck will need the voltmeter to test compressor for grounding, possibly install 3 in 1 booster device to save the refrigerator. some models might need new inverted board for the compressor. if there is no power to the unit.
Icing Up in Freezer
Probable causes: bad door seal
if the icing up is around the door seal it can be simply because the door was left open, defrost the fridge also inspect door gasket and make sure food items not preventing a good seal
Probable causes: defrost circuit components bad if the freezing is on the back panel
heater, timer, thermostat or control that controls the defrost circuit could be failed or working intermittently
will need disassemble freezer test components using a voltmeter. run diagnostics on some models.
Noisy Freezer
Probable causes:Failing evaporator motor
before the motor goes bad sometimes it starts making a lot of noise don't wait to replace it because the refrigerator will stop cooling properly
Other causes: ice buildup in the evaporator can get in the fan motor and get loud sometimes it can be because of the door not closing properly because of overloading the freezer door gasket or hinge issues
Door Not Closing Properly
Probable causes: Bad Door Hinge usually caused by overloading the door with that will cause the door to sag over time, not leveled refrigerator or bad door gasket will prevent door from closing right. Slide out freezer door when overloaded will sag and wont close properly or wear out the hinges. Sometimes can be fixed by simply adjusting the gaskets and Hinge placement
Ice Maker Not producing Ice
Probable Causes: Water supply canal frozen over, Not sufficient water supply, clogged water filter, bad water solenoid, faulty ice-maker, Freezer not clod enough
Symptoms: water valve can be damaged if the ice maker is overflowing, also if the water pressure not strong enough the valve may not close properly witch can cause the solenoid leak and freeze over the water supply tube. In that case defrost the fridge test the water pressure, replace the water filter if necessary, also check the water valve, if doesn't fix the problem replace the water solenoid.
Also turn off ice maker turn it back on an hour see if it cycles dumps the ice and fills with water? if it doesn't turn around replace the ice maker, make sure the power to the ice-maker, some ice-makers have rest button.
